STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR ELIOT SPITZER, FIRST LADY SILDA WALL SPITZER AND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DAVID A. PATERSON RECOGNIZING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY AND WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Today, we join with the rest of the world in celebrating International Women's Day, a cornerstone of Women's History Month. On this day, the world recognizes the unique struggles and significant achievements of women. In New York, we pay special tribute to those who played a pivotal role in the fight for justice and equality in the United States. New York women were and continue to be leaders in this struggle, organizing the historic 1848 Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls and tirelessly working to change the Constitution until they won the right to vote less than a century ago. It was in New York that the country saw its first female doctor, and where tens of thousands of women first unionized. The list of notable women in our state's history is as rich and diverse as New York itself. The bravery and leadership of these women changed the state, the country and the world and lives on today as we continue to fight for equal opportunities for women. We are proud to proclaim March 2008 as Women's History Month.
